Nonwoven geotextiles used in civil engineering and construction projects are essential materials that ensure the stability of various structures such as roads, railways, embankments, and dams.

The performance of these geotextiles varies greatly depending on the specifications of the raw fibers.

Today, we will summarize the main specifications of polyester staple fibers (PSF), which are most widely used in geotextiles for civil engineering applications.

1. Denier (D)

  • Range: 6D ~ 15D

  • 6D is relatively fine, allowing for the formation of a denser web, while 15D is coarser and more advantageous for strength.

  • The most widely used standard specifications for geotextiles are 6D, 7D, and 15D.

2. Cut Length
  • Range : 38 mm ~ 64 mm

  • 38 mm is suitable for forming a uniform web, while 64 mm provides stronger fiber bonding.

  • In general, 51 mm or 64 mm lengths are most commonly used.

3. Tensile Strength
  • Recommended Level : 3.5 ~ 4.5 g/den

  • If the tensile strength is too low, the fibers may tear easily during installation; if it is too high, workability decreases.

  • The 3.5–4.5 g/den range represents a balance between strength and processability.

4. Elongation at Break
  • Recommended Range : 40–60%

  • Less than 40% makes the fiber vulnerable to impact, while over 60% increases the risk of deformation under long-term loads.

  • The 40–60% range is considered the most ideal elongation for geotextiles used in civil engineering.

5. Other Properties
  • Crimp Number : 8–10 crimps per 25 mm → Contributes to fiber bonding and bulkiness.

  • Moisture Content : ≤ 0.5%, Dry Shrinkage : ≤ 3% → Ensures stable physical properties.

The typical specifications of polyester staple fibers suitable for geotextiles in civil engineering are as follows:

  • Denier: 6D–15D

  • Cut Length: 38–64 mm

  • Tensile Strength: 3.5–4.5 g/den

  • Elongation at Break: Selected within the 40–60% range
